STUDENT COMMONS, Southern California
Design Director (Concept Design) with Gensler
On track to achieve net-positive energy, net-zero water, LEED Platinum, and full Living Building Challenge certification, the project brings together a new student commons, housing administration offices, and visitor apartments at a public university in California, creating a new gateway to this part of the campus. The courtyard becomes a new social hub for the community and provides new passage from the street to dining and residence halls. The interiors are choreographed to frame selective views of the surrounding gardens. A large solar canopy shades the building and courtyard and provides an armature for a new photovoltaic array.
AWARDS: Three awards from the San Diego Green Building Council
“The most well-rounded, well-executed project. It is a great example of how sustainable synergies can be successfully integrated into a well-designed building. These design strategies should be in more of our public and private buildings.” —SDGBC jury
