HIDE AND SEEK, Chaumont-Sur-Loire, France
Collaboration with Siteworks
The annual International Festival of Gardens chooses designs for temporary gardens to be built at the chateau. Building on the festival’s theme of “play,” our entry considers the garden a place of imagination and conjures up children’s play spaces. Children seek out hidden spaces to act out stories: closets and clothing racks become woods or jungles. “Hide and Seek” offers a place to become lost and found, a place at once translucent and opaque. The texture of the garden is created by dense plantings of barley and rye grass mingling with hanging screens of agricultural shade cloth. The space is hidden and revealed as people move the screens along their runners. Light penetrates and is cast upon surfaces as it interacts with the scrim. Light and views are never the same from one moment to the next.
